What is whole body cryotherapy?
A unique alternative to cold water immersion.
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) involves short exposures to extremely cold, dry air (temperatures between -130°F to -184°F) for 2-3 minutes.
Increasingly common in use among athletes, it is used to purportedly enhance recovery after exercise and facilitate injury rehabilitation.
The first whole body cryotherapy unit was produced in Japan in the 1970’s and has since become popular worldwide.
What does whole body cryotherapy do?
Reductions in muscle and skin tissue temperature after whole body cryotherapy exposure may stimulate cutaneous receptors and excite the sympathetic adrenergic fibres, causing constriction of local arterioles and venules.
Consequently, WBC may be effective in relieving soreness, or muscle pain, through reduced muscle metabolism, skin microcirculation, receptor sensitivity and nerve conduction velocity.
Interestingly, a paradoxical increase in rectal temperature, followed by a slight decline, has been reported following exposure to the treatment.
There is also a body of evidence to suggest that WBC stimulates the autonomic nervous system (ANS), with a predominance of parasympathetic tone activation, after exposure.
Systematic reviews of whole body cryotherapy have repeatedly called for research studies to implement active surveillance of adverse events, which are suspected of being underreported.
Upon exiting the chamber i immediately had an overwhelming feeling of wellness and relief from my stress and anxiety. I was filled with unbelievable amounts of energy and brain clarity, not to mention I burned about 600 calories!
